CAMBRIDGE, ON, July 10 /CNW/ - ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. today announced it will begin shipping advanced new thermal devices over the next three quarters to enable the computer industry to achieve unprecedented levels of small form factor cooling efficiency within the next generation of processors.
Initial shipments of the devices are destined for customers of Intel Corporation, which recently announced the launch of the Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 Processor. The devices will incorporate folded fin technology, provided under license, by Robinson Fin Machines, Inc.
ATS also announced an ongoing development agreement with Torrington Research Company, a recognized industry leader in air movement systems that will allow ATS to broaden its thermal management technology portfolio going forward. ATS has been active in the US$2 billion thermal management market for more than three years and has a technology portfolio that includes passive and active thermal cooling solutions.
"The new devices we are bringing on the market represent the state-of-the-art in thermal management systems," said Bruce Seeley, Vice President, ATS Precision Components Group. "They have the potential to be up to 40% more efficient than competitive offerings and will alleviate the need for computer companies to utilize more expensive alternatives. As well, they will operate quietly and in a small package, making them ideal for the new generation of high-speed microprocessors."
Mr. Seeley said this launch is a signal that ATS is committed to producing "major advancements in electronic thermal cooling for microprocessor applications now and in the future.
"Within five years, it's likely that the power consumption of processors will increase exponentially and to enable this, computer manufacturers will need new cooling solutions that eclipse the capabilities of current thermal management systems. Our ongoing plan is to create innovative new designs in this field, partner with other technology leaders and lever ATS's manufacturing capabilities, knowledge and customer access to keep pace with the development initiatives of the world's leading microprocessor companies. In short, this is the first of many technological developments we expect to introduce in this exciting field."
Initially, ATS thermal devices will be produced in the Company's high volume ISO-and QS-certified advanced manufacturing facility in Cambridge, Ontario and supported through the Company's global network of operations.
